Providing Protection or Enabling Exploitation? Orphanages and Modern Slavery in Post-Disaster Contexts

Orphanages are a common child protection response to humanitarian crises spurred on by media and NGO depictions of the disaster orphan. Yet, decades research attests harm that orphanage care can cause. Driven aid funding, orphanages often sustained long after recovery phase. In recent years, has highlighted links between orphanages, exploitation modern slavery, particularly trafficking. This paper examines how perpetuation narrative sustains post-disaster which heightens risk, exposure, children makes suggestions for strengthening responses protect children.
